How we score
a car deal.
The Motrix Deal Score is a deterministic 0-to-100 grade. No black box. No AI inference. Every rule is published below — score the same deal twice, get the same number.
The 5 categories
OTD price vs market
40 / 100The single biggest factor. We take your out-the-door price (minus tax to isolate the negotiable portion) and compare it to the fair market range you provide. Full points if you're at or below market low. Zero points if you're 20% above market high. Linear in between.
Junk fees
30 / 100We sum the refusable fees on your quote: nitrogen, VIN etching, paint protection, fabric protection, theft tracking, market adjustment, dealer prep, and any portion of the doc fee above $200. $0 in junk fees = 30 points. $1,000+ in junk fees = 0 points. Linear in between.
APR vs current market
15 / 100We compare your APR to published benchmarks for your credit tier. Excellent (720+): 5.5–7.0%. Good (660–719): 6.5–8.5%. Fair (600–659): 9.0–12.0%. Building (under 600): 13.0–18.0%. Within the "good" end of your tier = full points. Above the "high" end by 50%+ = zero points.
Trade-in vs Carvana/CarMax comp
10 / 100If you have a trade-in, we compare the dealer's offer to your Carvana/CarMax instant offer. Dealer matches or beats Carvana = full points. Dealer pays 70% or less of Carvana = zero points. No trade-in = full points awarded by default. No Carvana comp provided = neutral score (5/10).
Loan term length
5 / 100Longer terms = more interest paid + longer time underwater on the loan. New car: 60 months = full points, 72 max. Used car: 48 months = full points, 60 max. 84-month loans always score zero in this category.
Score tiers
Rare. Means you're at or below market price, no junk fees, fair APR, and reasonable term. Don't over-negotiate; you might lose the deal.
Above-average deal with one or two soft spots. Light pushback on whichever category scored lowest will likely close it cleanly.
Standard dealer profit baked in. Look at the "action items" — there's usually $1,500-$3,000 in winnable concessions hiding here.
Multiple problems. Junk fees, above-market price, or above-tier APR. Ask the dealer to fix the lowest-scoring categories or find another dealer.
The dealer is trying to extract maximum profit. Either they have something rare you can't get elsewhere, or you should drive 100 miles to the next dealer.
