Buying a Car With Bad Credit: What It Really Costs and How to Pay Less
With subprime credit, the same $30,000 car can cost thousands more in interest than with good credit. Here are the 2026 average rates by credit tier, the computed difference, and the moves that actually lower what you pay.
Bad credit doesn't stop you from buying a car. It changes what the car costs — and it makes you the buyer a dealership's finance office is happiest to see.
01The rate gap, in real numbers
Average new-car loan APRs by credit tier, Q2 2026 (Experian, State of the Automotive Finance Market):
| Credit tier | Score | New car APR | Used car APR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super prime | 781+ | 4.41% | 6.29% |
| Prime | 661–780 | 6.15% | 8.81% |
| Near prime | 601–660 | 9.71% | 13.93% |
| Subprime | 501–600 | 13.52% | 19.10% |
| Deep subprime | 300–500 | 16.11% | 21.62% |
What that means on a $30,000 loan over 60 months (our math, using the averages above):
| Tier | Monthly payment | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| Prime (6.15%) | $582 | about $4,925 |
| Subprime (13.52%) | $691 | about $11,436 |
| Deep subprime (16.11%) | $731 | about $13,878 |
Same car. About $6,500 more in interest at subprime than at prime, before anything else goes wrong.
02Where bad-credit buyers get hit hardest
- The rate markup. Dealers can arrange your loan and add points to the rate the lender approved. Have your own approval so you know the real number (how the F&I office works).
- "Spot delivery." You drive home, then get a call that the financing "fell through" and the new terms are worse (the yo-yo, explained).
- Payment-first selling. "What can you afford a month?" lets a store stretch the term and stack add-ons until the payment fits.
03What actually lowers what you pay
- Get pre-approved before you shop. A credit union, a bank, or your own bank's app. Even a high-rate approval is a number the dealer has to beat.
- Lower the price you finance. Every dollar of junk fees you strip is a dollar you don't pay 13% on. A $1,697 "value added protections" line came off one of our real deals just by asking.
- Put down what you can, and keep the term short. Longer loans hide higher totals.
- Plan to refinance. On-time payments for 6–12 months can move your score — check refinance offers then (avoiding refinance scams).
- Get it in writing. Price, rate, term, total — before you sign anything.
Motrix negotiates the price for you, by text and email, so the number you finance is as low as it gets. Deal plan: $0 until you sign. $499 at close, $399 for the first 100 buyers. Text CAR to (786) 460-1312.
