Car buying service in
San Jose, California.

Tell Motrix the car. Motrix negotiates with San Jose-area dealers for you, gets every price itemized in writing, and hands you one out-the-door number to approve. Deal and Pro: $0 until you sign.

01Buying a car in San Jose: what is local

San Jose’s combined rate is 10% as of October 1, 2026 (CDTFA). Around it the South Bay is a patchwork: Santa Clara is 9.75%, Milpitas 10% and Campbell 10.5%. On a car priced in the tens of thousands, that spread is real money, but it follows your registration address, not the dealer’s.

The South Bay has dealers for most brands within a short drive, plus the Peninsula and East Bay beyond. Stores set the selling price, add-ons and electronic filing charge one by one, so the itemized out-the-door total is the only fair comparison.

02San Jose car sales tax in 2026

California sales tax on a car is the statewide rate plus any district taxes, and the combined rate for San Jose is 10% as of October 1, 2026. The district part follows the address the car is registered to, so buying from a dealer in a lower-rate city does not lower your rate.

California also taxes the full selling price. A trade-in does not reduce the taxable amount the way it does in Texas or Florida: the agreed trade-in value stays in the measure of tax. That makes the trade-in offer worth checking against a private sale or a written offer from another buyer.

03Doc fee: the $85 cap

California is one of the few states with a hard cap. Under Vehicle Code §4456.5, the document processing charge may not exceed $85 if the dealer is a DMV private industry partner, or $70 if it is not. The DMV says it does not require or collect this charge and that it is unlawful to present it as a government fee (DMV dealer procedures manual).

A dealer may also pass through an electronic filing charge for submitting your registration, but only up to what its electronic registration provider actually charges the dealer. A San Jose quote with a doc fee over $85, or a second “processing” or “service” fee on top of it, is worth questioning in writing.

04DMV registration fees

These are state fees, not dealer fees. They should match the DMV schedule; anything the dealer adds on top is a dealer charge.

DMV fee2026From Jan 1, 2027
Registration fee$73$76
California Highway Patrol fee$34$35
Road Improvement Fee (zero-emission vehicles only)$121$127
Transportation Improvement Fee, by vehicle value2026
$0 to $4,999$33
$5,000 to $24,999$66
$25,000 to $34,999$132
$35,000 to $59,999$198
$60,000 or more$231

On top of these come the vehicle license fee, which is based on the car’s value, and county and district fees that vary by where you live. Ask the dealer to label which lines on the quote are DMV fees.

05Add-ons to look for on a San Jose quote

Dealer-installed add-ons usually appear as a second sticker next to the factory window sticker, or as one bundled package line on the quote. The ones to question:

Pre-installed does not mean you must pay for it. Ask in writing for the item to come off, or for an equal cut to the selling price. Paste any quote into the free Fee Checker to see every dealer fee and add-on line flagged.

FAQ

San Jose car buying questions

What is the sales tax on a car in San Jose?

The combined sales tax rate for San Jose is 10% as of October 1, 2026 (CDTFA). It applies to the full selling price, because California does not subtract a trade-in. On a $40,000 car that is $4,000. The rate follows the address the car is registered to, not the dealer’s city.

Does a trade-in lower my sales tax in San Jose?

No. California includes the agreed trade-in value in the taxable measure of the sale (CDTFA annotation 140.0500). On a $40,000 car at San Jose’s 10% rate the tax is $4,000 with or without a trade. Compare what the dealer offers for your trade against a private sale or a written offer elsewhere.

What is the most a California dealer can charge as a doc fee?

Vehicle Code §4456.5 caps the document processing charge at $85 for a dealer that is a DMV private industry partner and $70 for one that is not. A separate electronic filing charge is allowed, but it may not exceed what the dealer’s electronic registration provider actually charges the dealer.

What are the DMV fees for a San Jose registration?

For 2026 the DMV registration fee is $73 and the CHP fee is $34, plus a Transportation Improvement Fee based on the car’s value, a vehicle license fee, and county and district fees. On January 1, 2027 the registration fee rises to $76 and the CHP fee to $35 (DMV VIN 2026-07).

How does Motrix work for a San Jose buyer?

You tell Motrix the car you want. Motrix negotiates with the dealers for you, gets itemized out-the-door prices in writing, contests add-ons you did not ask for, and brings you one number to approve. You only go to the dealership to sign. Motrix is online, so there is no office to visit.

What does Motrix cost?

Deal and Pro: $0 until you sign. The Deal plan is $0 today, $399 only when your deal closes ($299 for the first 100 buyers). Pro is $599, also owed only when a deal you accept closes. Concierge ($999) is paid to start.

Can I check a San Jose dealer quote for free?

Yes. Paste or upload the quote into the free Motrix Fee Checker at usemotrix.com/fee-scanner. It flags the doc fee, add-ons and anything that looks padded.
