01Buying a car in Tampa: what is local
Hillsborough County’s total surtax for 2026 is 1.5% (DR-15DSS), the highest of the Tampa Bay counties covered here: Pinellas and Pasco are each at 1%. On a car that means at most $75 of county surtax in Hillsborough, because the surtax only applies to the first $5,000.
Tampa buyers can compare dealers across Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco. The tax you pay does not change with the dealer’s county, but the selling price, dealer fee and add-ons do.
02Tampa car sales tax in 2026
Florida charges 6% state sales tax on the taxable price of a car. Hillsborough County adds a 1.5% discretionary surtax for 2026, and Florida applies county surtax only to the first $5,000 of a single item, so the county portion on one car is at most $75.
Two rules change the number. A trade-in is deducted before tax: Fla. Stat. 212.09 taxes the price of the car less the trade-in credit. And the surtax follows the county on your registration address, not the dealer’s county (Fla. Stat. 212.054), so shopping in a neighboring county changes the price and fees you can get, not your tax rate.
| Worked example | Tampa (Hillsborough County) |
|---|---|
| Taxable price (after any trade-in) | $35,000 |
| State sales tax, 6% | $2,100 |
| County surtax, 1.5% of the first $5,000 | $75 |
| Sales tax total | $2,175 |
| Nearby county | 2026 surtax | Max on one car |
|---|---|---|
| Hillsborough County (this page) | 1.5% | $75 |
| Pinellas County | 1% | $50 |
| Pasco County | 1% | $50 |

03Dealer fees: no cap in Florida
Florida sets no dollar limit on the dealer fee, whether the quote calls it a doc fee, dealer fee or predelivery service charge. The law regulates how it is shown, not how big it is. Under Fla. Stat. 501.976(18), every document with that line has to say the charge “represents costs and profit to the dealer.” Under 501.976(16), an advertised price has to include every fee the buyer must pay except taxes, tags, registration and title.
So a Tampa dealer fee is legal, set store by store, and part of the price. Compare quotes by the out-the-door total, not the fee line, and if one store will not move its fee, ask for the same amount off the selling price. The full breakdown is in the Florida dealer fee guide.
04Tag, title and registration
These are state fees, not dealer fees. They should match the FLHSMV schedule; anything the dealer adds on top is a dealer charge. From the FLHSMV fee schedule (electronic titles):
| FLHSMV fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Title, original (new vehicle) | $77.25 |
| Title, original (used vehicle) | $85.25 |
| Title, transfer | $75.25 |
| Lien recording (if financed) | $2 |
| Original or replacement license plate | $28 |
| Initial registration fee | $225 |
Annual registration is charged on top and varies with the vehicle, and the paper-title option adds $2.50. Whether the plate and initial registration fees apply depends on your situation, for example whether you are transferring an existing Florida plate. Ask the dealer to label which lines on the quote are FLHSMV fees.

05Add-ons to look for on a Tampa quote
Dealer-installed add-ons usually appear as a second sticker next to the factory window sticker, or as one bundled package line on the quote. The ones to question:
- Window tint, often pitched hard in the Florida sun. It can be worth having, but price it against an independent shop.
- Paint and fabric protection coatings.
- Nitrogen tire fill (see the dealer nitrogen fee).
- VIN etching and theft-deterrent devices.
- A bundled dealer add-on package with a friendly name and a round number.
Pre-installed does not mean you must pay for it. Ask in writing for the item to come off, or for an equal cut to the selling price. Paste any quote into the free Fee Checker to see every dealer fee and add-on line flagged.

Tampa car buying questions
What is the sales tax on a car in Tampa?
Florida’s 6% state sales tax on the taxable price, plus Hillsborough County’s 1.5% discretionary surtax on the first $5,000, for 2026 (Florida Department of Revenue, DR-15DSS). On a $35,000 taxable price that is $2,100 state tax plus $75 county surtax, $2,175 in all.
Does buying a car in St. Petersburg save a Tampa resident tax?
No. The county surtax on a vehicle follows the buyer’s registration address (Fla. Stat. 212.054), so a Hillsborough resident pays Hillsborough’s 1.5% on the first $5,000 wherever the dealer is. Shop Pinellas stores for a better out-the-door price, not for a lower tax rate.
Is there a cap on dealer fees in Tampa?
No. Florida sets no dollar cap on the dealer fee (also called the doc fee or predelivery service charge). Fla. Stat. 501.976(18) requires the fee to carry a printed disclosure that it "represents costs and profit to the dealer," and 501.976(16) requires an advertised price to include every fee the buyer must pay except taxes, tags, registration and title. The fee is set store by store, so the way to beat it is competing written quotes on the same car.
How does Motrix work for a Tampa buyer?
You tell Motrix the car you want. Motrix negotiates with the dealers for you, gets itemized out-the-door prices in writing, contests add-ons you did not ask for, and brings you one number to approve. You only go to the dealership to sign. Motrix is online, so there is no office to visit.
What does Motrix cost?
Deal and Pro: $0 until you sign. The Deal plan is $0 today, $499 only when your deal closes ($399 for the first 100 buyers). Pro is $799, also owed only when a deal you accept closes. Concierge ($1499) is paid to start.
Can I check a Tampa dealer quote for free?
Yes. Paste or upload the quote into the free Motrix Fee Checker at usemotrix.com/fee-scanner. It flags the dealer fee, add-ons and anything that looks padded.
