01Buying a car in Atlanta: what is local
Metro Atlanta has the deepest field of dealers in Georgia, spread from the Perimeter out to Gwinnett, Cobb and the south side. That is the leverage: the same car can carry a different selling price, add-on package and dealer fee at stores a short drive apart.
Because Georgia charges a one-time 7.0% TAVT instead of sales tax, an Atlanta buyer pays the same rate at a Marietta store as at a Buckhead one. What changes from store to store is the selling price and the fees, and in Georgia the doc fee is part of the value the 7.0% is charged on.
Most of the city is in Fulton County; part is in DeKalb County.
02Atlanta car tax in 2026: the 7.0% TAVT
Georgia does not charge sales tax on a car you title here. Instead, vehicles titled in Georgia pay a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) and are exempt from sales and use tax and from the yearly ad valorem tax. The current TAVT rate is 7.0% of the vehicle’s fair market value, the same whichever Georgia dealer you buy from.
For a new car from a dealer, the value is the higher of the retail selling price or the state’s assessment value, and the selling price includes delivery, freight, doc fees and similar charges. It is reduced by a rebate or cash discount the dealer gives at the sale and by your trade-in. The trade-in credit applies to dealer sales, not private ones.
| Worked example | No trade-in | With trade-in |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price, fees included | $40,000 | $40,000 |
| Trade-in allowance | $0 | $10,000 |
| Value TAVT is charged on | $40,000 | $30,000 |
| TAVT at 7.0% | $2,800 | $2,100 |
The title application and TAVT payment go to the county where you live, here Fulton County, and a Georgia dealer must accept them and file them for you. New Georgia residents are listed at a 3% TAVT rate; confirm with the county tag office which rate applies to you.
Sources: Georgia Department of Revenue, Vehicle Taxes: TAVT and annual ad valorem and the TAVT FAQ. Checked October 2026. This is general information, not tax advice; the example assumes the selling price is at or above the state assessment value, and the county tag office computes the final figure.
03Doc fee: a dealer charge, and it is taxed
Georgia’s Office of Consumer Protection treats dealer, “doc” and administrative fees as non-government fees. A dealer has to include them in an advertised price and may not present them as government charges; electronic title service fees are not government fees either (Georgia OCP, AutoInformer).
Because the doc fee is part of the value the 7.0% TAVT is charged on, a Atlanta buyer pays tax on it too. A quote with a large doc fee, or a second “processing” or “service” fee on top of it, is worth questioning in writing. If an advertised price did not include the fee, ask why.
04Georgia title and tag fees
These are state fees, not dealer fees. They should match the Georgia DOR schedule; anything the dealer adds on top is a dealer charge.
| State fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Title application | $18 |
| License plate registration (passenger car) | $20 |
| Alternative fuel vehicle fee, all-electric, non-commercial (July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027) | $238.59 |
| TAVT | 7.0% of value, once |
Ask the dealer to label which lines on the quote are state fees and which are its own.

05Add-ons to look for on a Atlanta quote
Dealer-installed add-ons usually appear as a second sticker next to the factory window sticker, or as one bundled package line on the quote. In Georgia they also raise the value TAVT is charged on. The ones to question:
- Window tint. It can be worth having, but price it against an independent shop.
- Paint and fabric protection coatings.
- Nitrogen tire fill (see the dealer nitrogen fee).
- VIN etching and theft-deterrent devices.
- A bundled dealer add-on package with a friendly name and a round number.
Pre-installed does not mean you must pay for it. Ask in writing for the item to come off, or for an equal cut to the selling price. Paste any quote into the free Fee Checker to see every dealer fee and add-on line flagged.

Atlanta car buying questions
What is the tax on a car in Atlanta?
A car titled in Georgia pays a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) instead of sales tax. The current rate is 7.0% of the vehicle’s fair market value (Georgia DOR). For a new car from a dealer that is the selling price, including doc and delivery fees, less any dealer rebate and less your trade-in. On a $40,000 car that is $2,800, or $2,100 with a $10,000 trade-in. It is paid at title through Fulton County.
Will I pay less tax buying from a dealer in another Atlanta-area county?
No. TAVT is 7.0% of the vehicle’s value wherever the dealer is (Georgia DOR). The title application and TAVT go to the county where you live, and the dealer files them for you. Shopping wider changes the selling price and fees you can get, not your rate.
How does Georgia treat dealer doc fees?
Georgia’s Office of Consumer Protection treats dealer, “doc” and administrative fees as non-government fees: a dealer must include them in an advertised price and may not present them as government charges. The same applies to electronic title service fees. Because the doc fee is part of the value TAVT is charged on, it is also taxed. Ask for it in writing and negotiate it like the price.
What are the title and tag fees for a Atlanta registration?
The Georgia title fee is $18 and the standard passenger-car license plate registration is $20 (Georgia DOR). An all-electric car also pays an annual alternative fuel vehicle fee of $238.59 for registrations from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
