01Buying a car in Augusta: what is local

Augusta sits on the South Carolina line, so buyers here often get quotes on both sides of the Savannah River, plus from the Atlanta stores a couple of hours west. Selling price, add-ons and dealer fees differ store by store.

Whatever store you choose, a car titled in Georgia pays the one-time 7.0% TAVT, not sales tax, and no yearly ad valorem tax after that (Georgia DOR).

Augusta and Richmond County are one consolidated government; title and TAVT are filed there.

02Augusta car tax in 2026: the 7.0% TAVT

Georgia does not charge sales tax on a car you title here. Instead, vehicles titled in Georgia pay a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) and are exempt from sales and use tax and from the yearly ad valorem tax. The current TAVT rate is 7.0% of the vehicle’s fair market value, the same whichever Georgia dealer you buy from.

For a new car from a dealer, the value is the higher of the retail selling price or the state’s assessment value, and the selling price includes delivery, freight, doc fees and similar charges. It is reduced by a rebate or cash discount the dealer gives at the sale and by your trade-in. The trade-in credit applies to dealer sales, not private ones.

Worked exampleNo trade-inWith trade-in
Selling price, fees included$40,000$40,000
Trade-in allowance$0$10,000
Value TAVT is charged on$40,000$30,000
TAVT at 7.0%$2,800$2,100

The title application and TAVT payment go to the county where you live, here Augusta-Richmond County, and a Georgia dealer must accept them and file them for you. New Georgia residents are listed at a 3% TAVT rate; confirm with the county tag office which rate applies to you.

Sources: Georgia Department of Revenue, Vehicle Taxes: TAVT and annual ad valorem and the TAVT FAQ. Checked October 2026. This is general information, not tax advice; the example assumes the selling price is at or above the state assessment value, and the county tag office computes the final figure.

03Doc fee: a dealer charge, and it is taxed

Georgia’s Office of Consumer Protection treats dealer, “doc” and administrative fees as non-government fees. A dealer has to include them in an advertised price and may not present them as government charges; electronic title service fees are not government fees either (Georgia OCP, AutoInformer).

Because the doc fee is part of the value the 7.0% TAVT is charged on, a Augusta buyer pays tax on it too. A quote with a large doc fee, or a second “processing” or “service” fee on top of it, is worth questioning in writing. If an advertised price did not include the fee, ask why.

04Georgia title and tag fees

These are state fees, not dealer fees. They should match the Georgia DOR schedule; anything the dealer adds on top is a dealer charge.

State feeAmount
Title application$18
License plate registration (passenger car)$20
Alternative fuel vehicle fee, all-electric, non-commercial (July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027)$238.59
TAVT7.0% of value, once

Ask the dealer to label which lines on the quote are state fees and which are its own.

05Add-ons to look for on a Augusta quote

Dealer-installed add-ons usually appear as a second sticker next to the factory window sticker, or as one bundled package line on the quote. In Georgia they also raise the value TAVT is charged on. The ones to question:

Pre-installed does not mean you must pay for it. Ask in writing for the item to come off, or for an equal cut to the selling price. Paste any quote into the free Fee Checker to see every dealer fee and add-on line flagged.

FAQ

Augusta car buying questions

What is the tax on a car in Augusta?

A car titled in Georgia pays a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) instead of sales tax. The current rate is 7.0% of the vehicle’s fair market value (Georgia DOR). For a new car from a dealer that is the selling price, including doc and delivery fees, less any dealer rebate and less your trade-in. On a $40,000 car that is $2,800, or $2,100 with a $10,000 trade-in. It is paid at title through Augusta-Richmond County.

Does a trade-in lower my tax in Augusta?

Yes, when you buy from a dealer. Georgia reduces the value TAVT is charged on by the trade-in value (O.C.G.A. §48-5C-1, Georgia DOR TAVT FAQ). On a $40,000 car with a $10,000 trade, 7.0% TAVT is $2,100 instead of $2,800. A private sale gives no such credit, so compare the dealer’s trade offer with that in mind.

How does Georgia treat dealer doc fees?

Georgia’s Office of Consumer Protection treats dealer, “doc” and administrative fees as non-government fees: a dealer must include them in an advertised price and may not present them as government charges. The same applies to electronic title service fees. Because the doc fee is part of the value TAVT is charged on, it is also taxed. Ask for it in writing and negotiate it like the price.

What are the title and tag fees for a Augusta registration?

The Georgia title fee is $18 and the standard passenger-car license plate registration is $20 (Georgia DOR). An all-electric car also pays an annual alternative fuel vehicle fee of $238.59 for registrations from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.

How does Motrix work for a Augusta buyer?

You tell Motrix the car you want. Motrix negotiates with the dealers for you, gets itemized out-the-door prices in writing, contests add-ons you did not ask for, and brings you one number to approve. You only go to the dealership to sign. Motrix is online, so there is no office to visit.

What does Motrix cost?

Deal and Pro: $0 until you sign. The Deal plan is $0 today, $399 only when your deal closes ($299 for the first 100 buyers). Pro is $599, also owed only when a deal you accept closes. Concierge ($999) is paid to start.

Can I check a Augusta dealer quote for free?

Yes. Paste or upload the quote into the free Motrix Fee Checker at usemotrix.com/fee-scanner. It flags the doc fee, add-ons and anything that looks padded.
