Car buying service in
Dallas, Texas.

Tell Motrix the car. Motrix negotiates with Dallas-area dealers for you, gets every price itemized in writing, and hands you one out-the-door number to approve. Deal and Pro: $0 until you sign.

01Buying a car in Dallas: what is local

Dallas buyers can draw quotes from stores across Dallas, Collin and Denton counties, and from Fort Worth on the other side of the Metroplex. Dealers set the selling price, documentary fee and add-ons store by store, so the itemized out-the-door total is the only number that compares them fairly.

Dallas, Collin and Denton counties each charge an $11.50 local registration fee for 2026 (TxDMV fee chart), so moving between them does not change that line. The 6.25% motor vehicle tax is statewide.

02Dallas car sales tax in 2026

Texas charges a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax, figured on the sales price minus any trade-in allowance. There is no city or county add-on to it, so a Dallas buyer pays the same rate as any other Texas buyer, and shopping a dealer in the next county changes the price and fees you can get, not the tax.

On a dealer sale the dealer collects the tax from you. If you are moving to Texas with a car already registered in another state, the Comptroller lists a $90 new resident tax in place of use tax.

Worked exampleDallas (Dallas County)

Motor vehicle sales tax, 6.25%$2,187.50

Source: Texas Comptroller, Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax (Tax Code ch. 152). Checked October 2026. This is general information, not tax advice; the dealer and the county tax assessor-collector compute the final figure.

03Documentary fee: the $225 rule

Texas regulates the documentary fee through the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner (OCCC). Under 7 Tex. Admin. Code §84.205, a documentary fee of $225 or less is presumed reasonable. A dealer that wants to charge more must first file a cost analysis with the OCCC showing the higher fee is reasonable, and carries the burden of proving it.

So a Dallas quote with a documentary fee above $225 is not automatically illegal, but it is fair to ask whether that filing is on record. Either way, compare stores by the out-the-door total, not the fee line, and if a store will not move its fee, ask for the same amount off the selling price.

04Title and registration

These are state and county fees, not dealer fees. They should match the TxDMV schedule; anything the dealer adds on top is a dealer charge.

TxDMV fee (passenger car or light truck to 6,000 lb)Amount
Base registration, 2026$50.75
Dallas County local fee$11.50
Base plus local$62.25

Dallas County (this page)$11.50$62.25
Collin County$11.50$62.25
Denton County$11.50$62.25

Other small state fees can apply depending on the vehicle and your situation. Ask the dealer to label which lines on the quote are TxDMV or county tax office fees.

05Add-ons to look for on a Dallas quote

Dealer-installed add-ons usually appear as a second sticker next to the factory window sticker, or as one bundled package line on the quote. The ones to question:

Pre-installed does not mean you must pay for it. Ask in writing for the item to come off, or for an equal cut to the selling price. Paste any quote into the free Fee Checker to see every dealer fee and add-on line flagged.

FAQ

Dallas car buying questions

What is the sales tax on a car in Dallas?

Texas charges a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax on the sales price minus any trade-in allowance, the same rate everywhere in the state (Texas Comptroller). On a $35,000 taxable price that is $2,187.50. On a dealer sale, the dealer collects it.

Is a Dallas dealer’s documentary fee capped?

Not with a hard cap. Under 7 Tex. Admin. Code §84.205, a documentary fee of $225 or less is presumed reasonable, and a dealer that wants to charge more must first file a cost analysis with the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner. Ask any Dallas store charging over $225 whether that filing is on record, and compare quotes by the out-the-door total.

How much is registration for a Dallas address?

The TxDMV base registration for a passenger car or light truck up to 6,000 lb is $50.75 for 2026, plus Dallas County’s local fee of $11.50, so $62.25 before other state fees. The title application fee is $28 or $33 depending on the county.

How does Motrix work for a Dallas buyer?

You tell Motrix the car you want. Motrix negotiates with the dealers for you, gets itemized out-the-door prices in writing, contests add-ons you did not ask for, and brings you one number to approve. You only go to the dealership to sign. Motrix is online, so there is no office to visit.

What does Motrix cost?

Deal and Pro: $0 until you sign. The Deal plan is $0 today, $399 only when your deal closes ($299 for the first 100 buyers). Pro is $599, also owed only when a deal you accept closes. Concierge ($999) is paid to start.

Can I check a Dallas dealer quote for free?

Yes. Paste or upload the quote into the free Motrix Fee Checker at usemotrix.com/fee-scanner. It flags the documentary fee, add-ons and anything that looks padded.
