01Buying a car in Houston: what is local

Harris County is the most populous county in Texas, and the Houston market runs well past it into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. That spread is the leverage: the same car can carry a different selling price, documentary fee and add-on sticker at stores a short drive apart.

Texas taxes the car itself the same everywhere in the state: 6.25% of the sales price minus your trade-in, with no city or county add-on. What does differ by county is the local registration fee. Harris County’s is $11.50 for 2026 on top of the $50.75 base, per the TxDMV fee chart.

02Houston car sales tax in 2026

Texas charges a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax, figured on the sales price minus any trade-in allowance. There is no city or county add-on to it, so a Houston buyer pays the same rate as any other Texas buyer, and shopping a dealer in the next county changes the price and fees you can get, not the tax.

On a dealer sale the dealer collects the tax from you. If you are moving to Texas with a car already registered in another state, the Comptroller lists a $90 new resident tax in place of use tax.

03Documentary fee: the $225 rule

Texas regulates the documentary fee through the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner (OCCC). Under 7 Tex. Admin. Code §84.205, a documentary fee of $225 or less is presumed reasonable. A dealer that wants to charge more must first file a cost analysis with the OCCC showing the higher fee is reasonable, and carries the burden of proving it.

So a Houston quote with a documentary fee above $225 is not automatically illegal, but it is fair to ask whether that filing is on record. Either way, compare stores by the out-the-door total, not the fee line, and if a store will not move its fee, ask for the same amount off the selling price.

04Title and registration

These are state and county fees, not dealer fees. They should match the TxDMV schedule; anything the dealer adds on top is a dealer charge.

Base registration, 2026$50.75
Harris County local fee$11.50

Fort Bend County$11.50$62.25
Montgomery County$10$60.75

Other small state fees can apply depending on the vehicle and your situation. Ask the dealer to label which lines on the quote are TxDMV or county tax office fees.

05Add-ons to look for on a Houston quote

Dealer-installed add-ons usually appear as a second sticker next to the factory window sticker, or as one bundled package line on the quote. The ones to question:

Pre-installed does not mean you must pay for it. Ask in writing for the item to come off, or for an equal cut to the selling price. Paste any quote into the free Fee Checker to see every dealer fee and add-on line flagged.

FAQ

Houston car buying questions

What is the sales tax on a car in Houston?

Texas charges a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax on the sales price minus any trade-in allowance, the same rate everywhere in the state (Texas Comptroller). On a $35,000 taxable price that is $2,187.50. On a dealer sale, the dealer collects it.

Will I pay less tax buying from a Fort Bend or Montgomery County dealer?

No. The Texas motor vehicle sales tax is a flat 6.25% of the sales price minus any trade-in allowance, wherever in Texas the dealer is (Texas Comptroller). Shopping across the Houston area changes the selling price, the documentary fee and the add-ons you can get, not the tax rate.

How much is registration for a Houston address?

The TxDMV base registration for a passenger car or light truck up to 6,000 lb is $50.75 for 2026, plus Harris County’s local fee of $11.50, so $62.25 before other state fees. The title application fee is $28 or $33 depending on the county.
